According to analysts from the insurance company VSK, the number of car thefts in Russia has decreased by 13% in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year. The most commonly stolen cars this year are VAZ models (60%), followed by Hyundai and Kia (13% each). However, last year, Kia (29%) and Toyota (18%) were at the top of the list.
The experts also noted an increase in the number of thefts occurring outside the insured cars' registered regions, particularly during inter-regional trips, rising from 6% in 2023 to 67% in 2024.
Dagestan is the region with the highest number of car thefts, accounting for 60% of the crimes. Taxis and car sharing services accounted for 67% of the incidents, indicating a preference for stealing cars owned by legal entities. This is an increase from 59% last year. The highest percentage of thefts this year occurred in March (53%) and April (20%).
The data also revealed that the number of car production in the country has increased by 66.6% from January to May 2024, with a total of 267,000 passenger cars produced. The statistics from Rosstat also showed a slight decrease of 2.1% compared to the same period last year.
